Training
Courses - Air
Conditioning
With impending inspections of air conditioning plant and
equipment being a mandatory requirement, this guide
outlines the requirements for training courses for air
conditioning energy assessment of buildings.

Air
Conditioning Training
It
is preferable that existing air conditioning
engineers and contractors respond to a new career
opportunity and broaden the scope of their
expertise by finding out more about air
conditioning energy assessment of commercial
property. In fact this is encouraged as part of
the UK Government guidelines. |
Pre-Qualification
I have no qualifications for air conditioning systems
energy assessment - What Do I Need?
If you have experience in energy assessment either as a Domestic Energy Assessor or a Commercial Energy Assessor for
commercial buildings, or the inspection or surveying of commercial buildings these would be
advantageous for Level 3. A Level 4 pass will allow you to assess more complex systems and, central air conditioning systems, in addition to simple unitary, split and multi-split packaged systems and all variable refrigerant flow systems that may be encountered as a surveyor.
For level 4 any candidates for this type of award must have some experience of air conditioning
systems, for example you may already practice as an air
conditioning installer, or design of such systems, or
perform maintenance or repairs on such equipment.
Dependent
on your previous experience, if you have recognised
qualifications in either energy assessment or air
conditioning, these may be considered a part of the
learning development and can count towards your diploma.
Course
Duration
Courses
as an Air Conditioning Assessor may take up to 6-12
weeks dependent on your previous experience in this field.
Costs
The
cost is largely dependent on the course provider,
and the level of accreditation you wish to obtain.
I
am an existing Air Conditioning Contractor - What do
I need?
Your
existing skills will prove useful in attaining competence
as an air conditioning energy assessor. These are
known as Air Conditioning Energy Assessors (ACEAs).
A diploma is available and accreditation is required
once you have successfully completed the course and
passed the examination.
Level
4 - ACEA Diploma
As for Level 3 training candidates must adhere to CIBSE TM44 when inspecting the air conditioning system and to submit
reports to their relevant accreditation scheme using standard report templates available from each accreditation scheme. The course will, in any event, include full training in the CIBSE TM44 methodology.
Where
can I get a Course?
It
is recommended that you receive correct training in
this field, some of the recognised scheme operators
are provided below. We do not recommend any
particular provider for learning to become an air
conditioning energy assessor (ACEA), however the
companies listed below have been approved by CLG
(Department of Communities and Local Government) as
recognised institutions for this purpose.
I
am an existing Energy Assessor - What do I need?
If
you are qualified as a domestic assessor you will
need to complete the course for Air Conditioning Energy
Assessor (ACEA). You will require an NVQ Level 3 ACEA
Diploma as a minimum requirement. Level 3 allows inspection of small air conditioning systems as a single packaged unit but may also apply to larger systems comprising several small packaged units.
Where
can I get training as an air conditioning assessor?
There
are several providers of training in this area of
expertise, these include NHER, RICS, CIBSE, Quidos,
Stroma and ECMK.
